The Ghosts –
A Group Portrait

The quiet thread that secretly
guides the development of the story
through all three books.

The ghostly figures presented here are not side characters. They form one of the deepest undercurrents in the Firecurl trilogy – a hidden structure around which the story intertwines in a quiet and persistent way.

They are not merely illusions or memories. They are real presences in the world of the Forest, and their appearance always marks a turning point. The ghosts do not speak of their past. They do not explain. But they are always connected – directly or indirectly – to the fates of the main characters.

Without their presence, the story cannot be fully understood.

These figures are divided into two distinct groups:

  • The first five appear in Book I, at moments when Anne faces forces she does not yet understand. These ghosts are emotional, surreal, and often illogical – shaped by something she herself seems to have forgotten.
  • The other two (part of a larger group) appear only in Book III, around Fido’s journey through the Desert. Their tone is different – darker, harsher, driven by ideas of punishment and condemnation.

The two groups never directly connect in the text, but the symmetry between them is evident. One carries sorrow and longing. The other – anger and a thirst for revenge. Together, they form the silent bridge between the beginning and the end of the story.

Exactly who they are – and where they come from – we won’t rush to reveal here.
